Volunteer Spotlight: YOU Boston Interns
This summer, we had the pleasure of welcoming two incredible interns from YOU Boston, Malachi Ahart & Luis Marte, to our team at the Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center. Their energy, enthusiasm, and dedication made a lasting impact on our visitors, volunteers, and staff alike. We’re excited to spotlight their contributions and celebrate their hard work!
Malachi Ahart
Hello! My name is Malachi Ahart. I am 18 years old, live in Everett and go to Everett High School. I helped guide people to the boats and also helped them with different information about the islands. The service opportunity was amazing to me. I love working for YOU Boston and the National Parks of Boston – so many nice people, everyone treats everyone with respect and kindness. Working for YOU Boston and the National Parks of Boston has been the best thing I have ever done. I love talking to people, helping people, and just being here.
Luis Marte
I, Luis Marte, have been working as a volunteer for the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park for about a month now. My experience working there has been delightful to say the least. Every day I come into the welcome center, rain or shine, there is always someone to greet me with a smile. The location itself is great as well. It’s beautiful on a sunny day and right by the water so its not usually too hot. I enjoyed talking with the people who passed by asking for help, whether it was to find the nearest bathroom or to figure out which island was best. (I’m a true believer that Spectacle Island is better by the way!) And above that, the assistance from the people who were there longer than I was-the park rangers-was amazing. With the assistance at the center, I learned many things I didn’t know of before, and some things even the rangers hadn’t learned yet. All in all, it was a great experience, and I’d love to volunteer again. That’s my two cents, but I suggest giving it a try for yourself and form your own opinion.
