Long Island
Owned by the City of Boston, Long Island has a diverse history and is home to a range of structures and facilities.
Residing at the center of the harbor, Long Island offers excellent views of the surrounding islands. Its diverse history includes once being used by colonial tenant farmers and as a relocation site for Christian Native Americans during King Philip’s War. It was also a defensive location during the American Revolution and the home of institutional care facilities.
The island is now home to a variety of social services facilities, as well as to Camp Harbor View, a day camp for Boston youth. At the northern point of the island is Long Island Head Light, one of three lighthouses in Boston Harbor that is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Visitation to the island is restricted due to several serious hazard locations resulting from aging structures.
