The Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Visitors With Full Three-Island Season, Expanded Programming, and New Ways to Explore the Harbor

As Boston welcomes visitors during the summer tourism season, Spectacle, Georges, and Peddocks Islands are all open to the public

BOSTON, Mass. (July 1, 2026) — Visitors to the Boston Harbor Islands will have more opportunities than ever to explore the unique state and national park this season, with Spectacle Island, Georges Island, and Peddocks Island all simultaneously open to the public for the first time in recent years.

As Boston continues to welcome visitors from around the world during FIFA World Cup 2026 and a busy summer tourism season, the Boston Harbor Islands offer beaches, hiking trails, historic sites, camping, climate education programming, and waterfront experiences just a short ferry ride from downtown Boston.

The 2026 season also features expanded camping opportunities, more Spectacle Summer Nights, free daily programming across the islands, and Climate Change Boston Harbor: Discover, Learn, Adapt!, Boston Harbor Now’s new initiative connecting visitors with the science and stories shaping Boston Harbor’s future.

Three Islands, Three Distinct Experiences

Visitors can explore three unique island destinations throughout the season.

  • Spectacle Island offers beaches, hiking trails, panoramic views of the Boston skyline, expanded camping opportunities, and a full schedule of free public programming.
  • Georges Island invites visitors to explore historic Fort Warren, one of New England’s most significant Civil War-era fortifications, while enjoying harbor views and family-friendly activities.
  • Peddocks Island provides opportunities to experience one of the largest islands in Boston Harbor, featuring miles of shoreline, hiking trails, open spaces, and a rich military and cultural history.

Together, the three Islands offer visitors a range of experiences that showcase the natural beauty, history, and recreational opportunities that make the Boston Harbor Islands a unique destination in Greater Boston.

Expanded Programs and Experiences

Several popular programs are returning this season with new additions and expanded offerings.

Camp Spectacle, Boston Harbor Now’s overnight camping experience on Spectacle Island, returns with expanded opportunities for participants to experience the Harbor Islands after dark. Campers can enjoy a night under the stars while taking in sunset and sunrise views of the Boston skyline.

The popular Spectacle Summer Nights series also returns, offering visitors exclusive after-hours access to Spectacle Island. The evenings, now extending throughout the summer, feature live music, food and beverages, ranger-led activities, access to beaches and trails, and some of the best sunset views in the region.

Visitors can also take advantage of free daily programming throughout the season, including guided walks, family activities, educational experiences, and ranger-led programs designed to help people connect with the islands’ history, ecology, and landscapes.

Climate Change Boston Harbor: Discover, Learn, Adapt!

Climate education continues to be woven throughout Boston Harbor Now’s programming this season through Climate Change Boston Harbor: Discover, Learn, Adapt!

The new initiative offers visitors opportunities to explore how climate change is affecting Boston Harbor and coastal communities while learning about resilience, adaptation, and environmental stewardship through interactive activities and public programs.

Programming takes place on Spectacle Island and at locations across the waterfront throughout the summer, helping connect people with the science, stories, and solutions shaping Boston’s coastal future.

Expanding Access to the Harbor Islands

Boston Harbor Now continues its work to make the Harbor Islands more accessible to residents throughout the region.

Earlier this year, the organization received a $100,000 grant to support ferry transportation for youth visiting the Harbor Islands, helping introduce more young people to one of Boston’s most unique public spaces.

Additional free and reduced-cost access opportunities will continue throughout the season, helping ensure more residents can experience the Harbor Islands regardless of financial barriers.

Discounted ferry tickets are available through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Public Library Museum Pass program. Visitors can save 50% on their ferry ticket purchase through this partnership program.

Plan Your Visit

Daily ferry service to Spectacle Island, Georges Island, and Peddocks Island operates throughout the summer season, until September 7th. The ferry schedule will switch to a more limited Fall schedule beginning September 10th.
